PROJECT BRIEF

Red Pony was commissioned to write content for a suite of seven fact sheets explaining the purpose and process of a long-term water resource assessment (LTWRA) and summarising the outcomes of the water resource assessment.

Under the Water Act 1989 (Vic), the Victorian Government conducts an LTWRA every 15 years to monitor and assess available surface and groundwater to be shared between consumers and the environment. These findings are used to inform a public consultation as part of a process to determine whether water-sharing arrangements need to be reviewed.

The assessment is undertaken with a number of Victoria’s water corporations and catchment management authorities. Given the broad range of water management issues and stakeholders affected by the assessment, the department elected to develop a comprehensive suite of communication materials.

Red Pony was commissioned to produce content for seven fact sheets ranging from a general overview of the process to a detailed explanation of the assessment findings. We drew on the extensive source material to produce draft text for each fact sheet, using a modified Microsoft Word template to prototype the final layout. Plain language principles were employed to ensure accessibility for the widest possible readership.

The draft fact sheets underwent a number of review stages, with input from a range of subject matter experts to ensure each stage of the assessment process, and its findings, was accurately represented.

Once in their final layout, Red Pony conducted a final independent proofread (by someone other than the original Red Pony author) of all seven fact sheets to eliminate errors, inconsistencies or ambiguities.

The end product is an information resource that can be employed in public consultations to inform policy decision-making.
